Dementia is a growing challenge. As the population ages and people live for longer, it has become one of the most important health and care issues facing the world. In England it is estimated that around 676,000 people have dementia. In the whole of the UK, the number of people with dementia is estimated at 850,000.

Hundreds of thousands of people will come to rely on relatives or carers to help manage their finances in the next 12 months because of illness, like Dementia, or an accident. But most families are unprepared for such an eventuality.

One vital document gives family members authority to handle the financial affairs of a loved one in need, or make decisions on their care and treatment – meaning they can stay on top of household bills and ensure their loved ones are cared for. It is known as a Lasting Power of Attorney or LPA.

The two types of LPA are Property and Financial Affairs and Health and Welfare. Both allow you to appoint a person that you trust to make decisions on your behalf if you find yourself in circumstances where you are unable to do so for yourself. The first allows your Attorney to look after your finances, claim benefits, deal with your property and utilities and manage your bank accounts. The second allows your Attorney to make important decisions about your medical treatment, social needs and where you live. Both have an important role to play and are invaluable for your family if the need arises.

Unbelievably, 44 million people in the UK do not have one – 85 percent of the UK adult population. If you lose capacity without a Lasting Power of Attorney in place your family will have to apply to the Court of Protection for a Deputyship Order in order to make decisions on your behalf. More about this can be found here.

An LPA can be set up in less than an hour and registered properly with the relevant government department in eight to ten weeks. LPAs can help everyone plan for the future, whatever it holds.
